"Blue Eyes"

My cute nephew just turned four months old, and I can't get over how cute he is. I love his big blue eyes and fat cheeks!
I can't believe I still haven't met him. I met all of the other babies by the time they were a month old, and I don't have any plans to meet him in the near future... BOO! I guess that's what I get for living all the freaking way over here.

"The Hardest Part"

Whenever I tell people I'm a social worker, they automatically respond with, "Oh, that must be hard." I'm never quite sure how to respond to this statement. I feel like I've built up a pretty big emotional wall when it comes to work and a lot of things that should generate a reaction don't really get to me. At times I deal with things by trying to find the humor in them. I'm pretty sure when I try to explain this to people they think I'm a cold-hearted freak. So, usually I just shrug the "that must be hard" statement off and try to change the subject. Let's face it, working with drug addicts and their children doesn't necessarily generate the dinner friendly conversations.

The last two weeks at work have definitely tested the strength of my emotional wall. I've definitely cried more days than not. We had a couple of emergencies come up, and I had to do an emergency removal of two little girls from their grandmother's home. I couldn't believe how hard it hit me. I tried to keep the tears in while the girls hugged their grandmother goodbye at 10:00pm at night before I took them to their new home. After they said their goodbyes, I drove the girls to their new home. I was really focusing on not getting lost, and I ran a red light. My boss screamed, "Melissa, it's a red light!!" and immediately the little girls caught on to what was going on. We were attacked with an endless supply of red light comments -- "Ms. Melissa, did you just run a red light?" "Ms. Melissa, are you going to go to jail?" "Ms. Melissa, are we going to get hit by another car?" bla, bla bla... I tried to distract the girls by talking to them about different things, but I eventually got distracted, and quit talking because I had gotten us lost. One of the girls broke the silence by saying, "Ms. Melissa, please don't run red lights because then you'll go to jail, and you won't look so cute when we see you on Mondays." I couldn't help but bust up laughing as I thanked her for the advice. It's comments like this that definitely make the hard part of my job worth it.

"Rainy Days"

On Thursday and Friday the forecast was saying we were not going to have a good weekend, and I was freaking right out about it. I really can't handle it when it's good weather all week and then the weekend is crappy. Luckily, a miracle happened on Saturday and we woke up to sunny skies. We hurried and made it on the 10 am train to the beach in time for another good day...
Last year when Ali and I were both unemployed we spent quite a few weekdays at the beach together when we should have been looking for jobs. Saturday we reunited on the beach for some more good times...

Sunday was more amazing weather. I seriously cannot get over how nice it's been this summer. It's freaking August in NYC, and we're having the most beautiful days. We headed to Central Park to take advantage of the afternoon.

I don't want the weekend to be over.. Boo!

"Moab" and "NYC -- Gone, Gone"

Last week we went to see this little guy, Conor Oberst...

We were both pleasantly surprised. It was a really really good time. I think I might like his solo stuff better than Bright Eyes even though I guess it's pretty much the same thing, right? It just doesn't seem quite as depressing...I feel like the new album is the perfect mix of my two lives -- NYC and Utah... Holla!!

"Roxanne"

For the big 31 Davis got tickets to see The Police... This was a pretty good show. It was awesome to see such a fun band on their last tour. The concert was a little random... the B 52's opened who were just kind of strange. Then, during the middle of the set, the band ran off stage with a camera following them and some slut bomb girls shaved off Sting's sexy sexy beard. After the shave Sting came back without a beard and without a shirt. I don't know what version of Sting was sexier -- Bearded or Shirtless. I'll take either. I love love love that man. Oh yeah, it was pretty fun to sing along to the songs too! Good times.

Here's a nice view of the band...
Holla!

"So You Think You Can Dance"

I 've been a little emotional about these guys lately....Seriously, I don't know what it is but Katee and Joshua have really been getting to me the last two weeks, and I just cry and cry and cry when I watch them. They're amazing. I'm pretty sure Davis thought I was having a nervous breakdown last night because I couldn't get it under control -- I cried the entire show. What's wrong with me? I just love this show, and I guess I get a little emotional about the dancing. Nat sent me a countdown of the twenty best dances from the show
and I remember every single one of these (except season 1 because I wasn't around that summer). I love #5 the most, if you only watch one watch that one. When I lived in SLC we watched that stupid dance about 5o times everyday. We were a little out of control. I'm sad that after tonight it's allover.
I'm going go ahead and say that I think Joshua is going to win with Katee coming in a close 2nd. Joshua might be the cutest thing I've ever seen and Katee is a beautiful dancer. I can't wait for the results!!

"Kids"

I remember seeing the trailer for American Teen and thinking that I needed to see it because I had a trailer crush on Mitch, pictured here (yes, I'm openly admitting to having a crush on a 17er, and yes, the crush got bigger during the movie. See it, and your love for Mitch will grow too!)...I forgot about the movie until Nat told me she saw it last night and she thought I would enjoy it, and let me tell you, that girl knows me pretty well. I loved this movie. It was perfect mix of laughter, tears, memories, and good times. Who knew high school could be captured so accurately? Now I can't get this song out of my head. Who knew MGMT would be the new licensing kings? I swear they're allover the place these days.

"Sunday Morning"

When I lived in Sugar House my roommates and I would do brunch pretty regularly at Blue Plate. Yesterday, Nici, Davey, Matt, and I ventured in for a greasy fix and we ran into some pretty big celebs -- Dooce, Jon, and Leta. Luckily, they sat within perfect viewing range from our table so we could stalk them throughout our meal. Jon and Dooce were pretty cute and seemed to be into each other talking it up the entire time. I wanted to go talk to her, but I figured she'd probably tell me to f-off. Who knew I'd have a celebrity sighting in Utah? Just another reason I should move back to the beehive state.

"Desert Ninja"

Davey took us on a little sleepover to the dunes....

We were singing "Desert Ninja" the whole time. In case you've never heard that song, it's sung to the tune of "Bleeding Love," and it goes something like this...

It was a hot, hot, day...

Since Nici and I weren't capable of driving, Matt was my partner in crime.

Dave and Nici got stuck for a minute....

But we all made it through the day to play in the fire...

Holla!
Who knew that Nici, Dave, and I would all fit in one bag?

"Old Friends"

Luckily, Heid was in Utah the same time I was so I was able to go to her little VHS friend party.  I always think it's pretty fun to hear what everyone is doing at these things.  It's kind of crazy because everyone is at such different stages of their lives... married, 1, 2, 3 kids, single, going to school, just working, bla bla bla.... It's crazy how in just seven short years all of our lives went in such different directions.

"Stars"

It's just not summer without little trips to Star Valley. Seriously, that place is what summer is all about to me. I just spent four days up there and was NOT ready to leave. The morning we were leaving I started to stress right out. I know I'm not going to go back for probably another year, and it just makes me sad to think about it... Boo.

Anyways... We made good use of the short time we had up there...

We took the kids down the Salt River... My body has been numb for the past three days from the freezing water...

Matt, James, and Olivia

After tubing, Matt decided he didn't have to wear his shirt for the rest of the weekend...
Here he is getting the dye ready for our annual tie dye fest...

Our professional shirts...

Roco felt left out, so I gave him a little mohawk...

Having the kids up there it makes it so much fun....
Olivia, Paul, Ellie ready to swim...
William and Paul hanging out...

The girls....

I want to go back right now!!
